( The stench of industrial excess weighted upon the atmosphere of the slums, and it didn't help that a dense fog had colored the slums sepia. Everything was an all-around mess, in the sense of some gritty film noir. Anyone who laid their eyes on the place immediately forgot they were seeing life in rose-tinted glasses. The slums spite you in your face, and smirch the roses with sweat, dust, and filth. )
